In this temple, as in the hearts of man, for whom he saved the earth

Time:02:04 am
today in visual journal we went to the kobenhavn opera house, new by henning larsen ( who by the way i am now really into). i think i might do my senior thesis on him/them? we started out in nyhavn, right next to this building, the nagivatørernes huse, which i photographed because for some reason i thought annicka would like it...i think it's an arctic navigator/explorer center or something:

anyways the day started out normal and sunny and suddenly we were standing on the ocean and it went from 60 to 40, sunny to black, and still to 50 mph winds in about 10 minutes. on the water taxi:

i guess being on the baltic that's a normality. the morning was spent trying to sketch this building.

i was sitting out by the water, trying to do a good perspective, and i almost lost my (note: HUGE) purse to the wind! i did in fact loose two drawings i had done on trace, ran down the dock after them but they were sacraficed to the sea. i watched them float away..and turned around to see all the older-looking danes who were touring the building, looking out drinking coffee, rooting for me. they shrugged and smiled. anyways drawing will seem eternally easy after this experience...i can't believe how intense the wind here is. i couldn't hold a line.

so after that i did some other stuff, hit up my favourite kiosk..i have to represent for everyone who isnt aquainted with the unspoken kiosk wars...they're 2-per-block and are exactly identicle: beer and icecream. naturally.

and i realized that this building i walk by every day was the first jacobsen building in kbh...the first functionalist building in kbh. it now houses cafe stelling, where i think i might go for dinner this week. i personally find it to be one of the best buildings i've ever seen. that's a pretty grandiose thing to say eh? but it's true.

for anyone who wondered what a danish station wagon looks like, here it is. there are like 3 little kids in there all wrapped up in blankets. when it's warm the top comes off.

the radhusplads...it's winter.

so my last three days have been spent in the studio...so not so much to report. but here are some pictures!

this is the view from inside my room out onto the balcony. it's too dark here, but SO NICE

so, here i am with some of my new friends at the carlsberg brewery!

this one is for amy liedman. this deerhead is apparently about 5,0000000000078191 years old.

this is the nice guy who let my group come into his house in albertslund and photograph it all. he was so pleasant..he barely spoke english but was still SO happy 4 rude americans were coming to nose around his house of 40 years. he's a farmer, yet here he is showing us some pictures in his jacobsen monograph! he had a swan SAS chair and two other original jacobsens in his tiny pre-fab unit. he was INCREDIBLY proud of them..i mean, i would be too, it was just sweet. after one of our group members sat down in the swan, he told us that he never lets anyone sit on it except for special occasions, like us...and never lets anyone photograph it because crooks could find out he owned it and come and lift it...which sound paranoid but is totally true. those things are worth like...tens of thousands of dollars. he told us that now all jacobsen designs are implanted with GPS chips so that if they're stolen they can be located. the swan:

this post seems to be lacking in stuff that's over 500 years old, so here is....a swedish longhouse!!

so today i took a break from working in the studio to go with my friend joe to do the most touristy thing you can do in kobenhavn except for the little mermaid or something...have a beer on nyhavn. i know, i know, but it was so nice and soon the great murk is gonna set in.
one of the streets of dis buildings...

gammel torv, the square our studio is off of...i think it's the oldest square? not sure. the name means 'old square' so i mean...its at least older than kongens nytorv, which is 'the king's new square,' which looks old as hell to me at least. i'm obviously really soaking up the history here, eh?

here is another pic of the ivan grundahl thing i was trying to portray yesterday...albeit they changed the hat.

i call this one....surprising use of a shrimp # 2;"louis vuitton"

nyhavn.

nyhavn...right next to the asian brothel!

here's where we had our beers...havfruen: all fish, all the time!

you get the idea

oh man, this guy was AWESOME. nyhavn might be touristy but today it was all danes..this guy we assumed was some kind of nordic re-enactor, cuz he had furs on and was drinking out of a horn, but we got closer and he started singing 'davey crocket' REALLY loudly with a danish accent...it was like 'daaahvey crooooket, keeing af the wild frahntor" i almost pissed my pants...

and today's money shot: little blond kid and grandpa on their bike.

okay, so i used a really shitty new prog to re-do these, but to my surprise it put a huge DEMO BAR THROUGH THEM but i am gonna post them anyways cuz it would take me forever to redo it all...so sorry guys!!!

im repping vestama. i ride this line every day. the metro stops are only 2 yrs old, and they include these really high (like 65 feet) escalator atriums...but they had to put up new railings because a bunch of danes fell down and died while drunk...i actually know a person whose friend was 'leaning over' a little too far one night and died upon impact. of course the guy who designed it is italian. no dane would design shit like that.

here is norreport, the station i get off at every day. for some reason i took this picture on the one day it was cloudy...it's been bright and like 85 every day, otherwise.

the below pic is probably hard to make out, but it was all i could do...it's important because it represents my quintessential idea of danish haute couture.

and of course, it wouldn't be a trip to europe without this event: the surprising use of a shrimp.

and the money shot....danes on bikes.

the building behind them is where the crown prince and princess live...and they are expecting a baby in october!!! people here are going to go nuts. i can't wait.

wow. what a day. we went to the fridlandsmuseet this morning to sketch the vernacular arch from sweden/denmark pre-1700, and it was very very very awesome - all half timbered turf-roofed and such. everything was unpreserved, just moved from their places. our arch prof/ advisor john took us back to his house then, which is 300 yrs old still with a straw roof, for hygge and dinner and everything. his wife susse brought had set up tables and everything in the garden, and we hung out by their canal, which leads to the ocean. he told me that lars von trier lives next door, and he (john) taught him how to kayak a few yrs ago. trier's therapist said that to conquer his paranoia he needed to run, kayak, something like that. so he and lars von trier hang out and kayak on this canal.
so we ate sausages (well some) and talked to everybody - we were shown around the compound which was amazing, with three studios built directly from le corb's vacation house in nice, using modular type with 9 post construction or whatever - just adapted to scandinavian aesthetics. then john let loose that he worked for jorn utzon for a while and knows tadao ando. i almost went into cardiac arrest but suceeded in keeping my cool. he also kayaks every year in greenland and writes books on inuit culture in his free time. keep in mind this couple is like mid-60s.
i am in shock about how amazing the hospitality of people here is, and the basic appreciation for life. i hope someday i can be something like these people are naturally.
also we tied last night in the qualifying rounds in football, so of course like 400 22 yr old danish kids stomped and shreiked around the building until like 4 am. so funny.

we went to tao tonight with tasha's parents and got pretty much the best table ever there. tao was incredible. tonight was the first time ever that new york has seemed like a happy city. we walked down park avenue after dinner. we were going to see some statue, when i looked up and realized we were standing underneath the LEVER building. that moment of realization was so memorable.

eating at the lever house restaurant is on my top 20 things to do in life list.

i think i have basically decided on going to the Københavns Universitet, if i get in.

off to watch the godfather part II with ben.

erin started me wondering: what DOES happen to all those friends who you haven't seen for a year but are still in your life ambiguously as phonebook entries, etc. etc.? they get erased and at that point for all intents and purposes they are gone forever. because it's true, you will never see them again. that a little bit of data in a cell phone chip can mean the difference between an old friend and a stranger. just that one invisible signifier. like kevin lynch's idea of the 'edge' in the city. there should be some software that somehow links up all of the aquaintances and run-ins you've had in your 19 years. i bet it would be mind-blowing, i bet it would cause us to take a lot more care with how we go about spending our time.

p.s. ben, you are the absolute best thing ever! i love you!

I LOVE CONFERENCE WEEK ONCE ITS OVER

“If there is a fog and you’re coming into land, you never know if the currents are going to take you to Danzig or Malmö or some other city. But something we must find, and preferably an important idea, even at the risk of not knowing where we will wind up. You can rest assured of one thing: I will finish before the sun sets.”

alvar aalto in 1957

i think i want to either devote my life to studying aalto or be an architect...

oh shit this makes me so excited i feel like i'm going to puke, literally:
http://www.polshek.com/inst_scan.htm

The glass, in 1950, may have indicated an openness. But in 2004, it's possible for it to indicate any number of things according to the dweller's mental life - thus, the VAC follows no classical pure formalism, rather, a new kind of purity that has its basis in semiology and the relativity of 'pure form' in relation to the personal notion of pure form that naturally occurs in each person who walks through these transparencies, into a building built literally and phenomenologically for their own most individual purposes.

oh man i love forte's class so much...jesus christ.

so what's up, conference week? i'm going to spend you writing about midwestern church design in the sixties, i think! okay? sweet!

my family is totally awesome. also, i really like being able to see how hilarious everyone from ssa is now, at least judging by their pictures on facebook.

i love my friends very much
